In most instances, it happens when you download a package or archive (ZIP, TGZ etc.) and extract it to your local disk. Everything looks all right, but you are surprised when try to open some file in extracted folder and this error message appears.
Why The File Name is Too Long Error Occurred?
Subsequently a little digging around I found a solution to this problem. Every operating system has a 256-260 character file/path limit. This is the character limit for a file name, the file didn’t have a longer name than 256 characters. This limit includes the drive letter, colon, backslashes, spaces, folder names, the file name, file extension, the dot that appears before the extension, and an additional hidden character.
Utilizing the case of a file called FileA.txt on the C drive in Folder1, the full file name is C:\Folder1\FileA.txt – which is 21 characters and the path is 11 characters.

How to Fix Explorer.exe ‘The file name is too long’ Error?
Comfortably, the solution to this stupid error is also a bit silly. However, it is tried and it worked on every time. You just need to follow the simple steps below:
- Open the folder that contains the long name error file.
- Go one folder above (Parent Folder) where your document is stored. Rename that folder to something shorter as much as possible (you could use only 1 character), 2 or 3 characters are enough. This should allow you to open the file or document without error.
- Now change the file or document to a shorter name. Change the folder back to the original name. Check if you can still open your file, then you’re good! If you can’t open the file yet, move the folder to another location.
